Ice‐Shelf Meltwater Overturning in the Bellingshausen Sea

چکیده
Hydrographic data are analyzed for the broad continental shelf of Bellingshausen Sea, which is host to a number rapidly thinning ice shelves. The flow warm Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) onto observed in two major glacially carved troughs, Belgica and Latady troughs. Using ship-based measurements potential temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, collected across several coast-to-coast transects over 2007, velocity circulation patterns inferred based on geostrophic balance further constrained by tracer mass budgets. Meltwater was at surface intermediate depth toward western side shelf, collocated with outflows. maximum conversion rate from dense CDW lighter water masses mixing glacial meltwater estimated be 0.37 ± 0.1 Sv both density spaces. This diapycnal overturning comparable previous estimates made neighboring Amundsen highlighting overlooked importance modification production associated melting Sea.

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...
Spatial characterization of the meltwater field from icebergs in the Weddell Sea.
We describe the results from a spatial cyberinfrastructure developed to characterize the meltwater field around individual icebergs and integrate the results with regional- and global-scale data. During the course of the cyberinfrastructure development, it became clear that we were also building an integrated sampling planning capability across multidisciplinary teams that provided greater agil...
متن کاملWater masses, ocean fronts, and the structure of Antarctic seabird communities Putting the eastern Bellingshausen Sea in perspective
Waters off the western Antarctic Peninsula (i.e., the eastern Bellingshausen Sea) are unusually complex owing to the convergence of several major fronts. Determining the relative influence of fronts on occurrence patterns of top-trophic species in that area, therefore, has been challenging. In one of the few ocean-wide seabird data syntheses, in this case for the Southern Ocean, we analyzed amp...
متن کاملDaily rations and growth of larval krill Euphausia superba in the Eastern Bellingshausen Sea during austral autumn
As the German contribution to the Southern Ocean Global Ocean Ecosystems Dynamics Study (SO GLOBEC), RV Polarstern visited the Eastern Bellingshausen Sea between 18 April and 1 May 2001. This paper examines in situ feeding cycles, ingestion rates and growth of larval krill Euphausia superba. Larval krill were exceptionally numerous, especially over the shelf break and continental slope: mean 88...
